Barcelona's first airfield began its operations in 1916 in the town of El Remolar. Since it couldn’t be much expanded to handle an increasing traffic, a new airport was constructed in El Prat in 1918. Used as headquarters by the Aeroclub of Catalonia, it was also the base for the Spanish Navy's Zeppelin fleet.

Starting in 1990, El Prat underwent major developments to modernize and expand its facilities in anticipation of the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.

To put an end to the confusion brought by inconsistent use of its name in the media, the airport was officially named Barcelona-El Prat on June 6, 2011.

Despite the current economic crisis, Barcelona it is the only Spanish airport which traffic increased in 2012 (35 millions passengers).
